CREATORS
Kimberley de Jong (Choreographer) & Jon Lachlan Stewart (Director)
Crawling, bawling, shitting, falling, breaking, jumping, rallying, cutting ties, ingesting heavy drugs, loving, fucking, holding on forever, throwing herself against walls, falling in love again, giving birth, living the psychedelic existential void that is giving birth, raising, changing, feeding, sucking, disappearing, aging, dying, smiling.
Cycle is a visceral and visually stunning journey through a woman’s life, from birth to giving birth, and ultimately to death. Inspired by the wordless graphic novel by artist Ruth Gwily, the production takes on the raw, surreal, and symbolic tableaus of human existence. Through a striking blend of vaudeville, ballet, and the absurd, choreographer Kimberley de Jong and director Jon Lachlan Stewart explore the violent, tender, tragic, and beautiful dimensions of a woman’s life and relationships.
Using no dialogue, Cycle brings to life the evocative images of Gwily’s illustrations with a unique fusion of movement, objects, live video, and theatrical play.
Artistic Vision
In Cycle, two characters step out of the graphic novel’s pages to perform their surreal, symbolic rituals in front of an audience, as though consciously aware of themselves as performers. This adaptation uses dance, theater, and video to explore the complex dynamics of a male-female relationship and the existential highs and lows of life.
The full premiere of Cycle will take place at Espace Libre in Montréal, February 2025.
