About the company

Surreal SoReal is a multidisciplinary theatre company that often brings together artists from dance, theatre, and puppetry to create performances that extend beyond spoken language. Social satire lies at the heart of much of our work, and we are interested in creating spaces where Francophone and Anglophone artists can exchange perspectives on the world and the issues shaping it. Surreal SoReal bridges Montréal’s two solitudes, fostering collaboration and cultivating an artistic language that is uniquely rooted in the city’s bilingual community.

Recent productions include Le Testament des célébrités (CTDA), Le Roi Lear (TDP), and Cycle (co-création avec Kim De Jong, Espace Libre). 

About the project

Surreal SoReal Theatre will produce CATCHER, a dance-theatre project inspired by the imagery and story of The Catcher in the Rye, by J.D Salinger, co-produced with the Un Yamada dance company in Japan. The project will be directed by Jon Lachlan Stewart, and choreographed by Un Yamada. The project’s first intensive workshop will be in December of 2026, and we are looking for three Montréal dancers for Un Yamada to work with when she arrives in Montréal. 

What we’re looking for

We welcome artists of all genders, including transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse artists. There are no specific casting or age requirements. Surreal SoReal is looking for three contemporary dancers or physical performers with dance and movement experience. Performers will be asked to improvise physically as well as learn assigned choreography, but they will also be asked to embody characters, connecting with other performers onstage in a more relaxed manner akin to the work of an actor. For this, we are looking for a relaxed and more natural physical body onstage.

  • The dancers and performers will not be asked to deliver text in this audition.
  • Dancers and performers will also be asked to learn Lindy Hop steps!

Audition times

The auditions will be held in the following time slots:

  • Friday September 4, between 14h – 16h
  • Wednesday, September 9, between 14h – 16h

Contract dates

Performers must be available between 7 – 19 of December, 6 days a week for 4 to 5 hours daily, either mornings or afternoons. If there are MINOR conflicts within these dates we may still consider bringing on performers.

Rate

Performers will be paid a rate of between 25$ – 30$ hourly, depending on the confirmed final budget.
